Industrial Pretreatment Inspector
Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility (AWWU)
Location: Anchorage, Alaska
Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Industrial Pretreatment Inspector to support environmental protection and regulatory compliance in one of the most unique and scenic regions of the country.
Under the general supervision of the Industrial Pretreatment Coordinator, this position plays a key role in implementing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP). The Inspector is responsible for evaluating industrial and commercial discharges to the public sewer system to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Key Duties:
- Inspect industrial and commercial facilities to monitor compliance with discharge regulations.
- Conduct field sampling and testing; perform QA/QC procedures and maintain sampling equipment.
- Collect, evaluate, and manage technical data related to industrial discharges.
- Assist with drafting enforcement actions and regulatory correspondence.
- Support the preparation of compliance reports and program documentation.
- Review technical documents such as discharge permits, treatment plans, and waste profiles.
- Testify in hearings or enforcement proceedings when required.
- Provide education and outreach to industrial users and the public.
- Support future source control programs including Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG), Dental Amalgam, Food Service Establishments, and Sanitary Sewer Overflow tracking.
This position offers a dynamic mix of fieldwork, technical analysis, and public interaction. The Inspector represents AWWU in communications with regulatory agencies, industry representatives, and community stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and five (5) years of experience in one or more of the following fields: drafting, surveying, inspection, materials testing, plan review, permitting, computerized mapping, computer assisted design (CAD), traffic signal control, and/or code enforcement, and at least one (1) year of which must have been at the Engineering Technician II level with Municipality or equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Associate’s degree in Engineering, Geomatics, Construction Management, Computer Assisted Design (CAD), or a discipline specific to the department, and three (3) years of experience in one or more of the following fields: drafting, surveying, inspection, materials testing, plan review, permitting, computerized mapping, computer assisted design CAD), traffic signal control and/or code enforcement, and at least one (1) year of which must have been at the Engineering Technician II level with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Geomatics, Construction Management, or a discipline specific to the department, and one (1) year of experience at the Engineering Technician II level with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.
Must possess and/or obtain:- Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
- Valid State of Alaska Driver's License and satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
- Code Enforcement Officer Certification at time of hire or within six (6) months of hire.
